Lisa Mathiessen on joy in our work
I think buildings could do more to remind us all of our natural selves and
our connections to the natural world. I think there is a joy that informs
much of the green "movement" (for lack of a better word) that is not yet
being communicated to the industry as a whole. Too often we are beating
people over the heads rather than creating that desire and joy that is the
real reason for what we do.
Even within this movement, we tend to believe that this is all about
humanity - that we are saving resources for humans, creating a better
environment for humans. This is the thinking that got us into this mess. We
need to remember that we are just animals - no better or worse - worth
neither more nor less - than other animals and beings. We need to realize
that saving the environment is a moral issue - probably the moral issue of
our age.
In my own practice, I am working more on communicating values and passion.
At the same time, I am trying to develop better tools, a better process, and
most importantly, a better way to communicate that process. I find that many
people want to do the right thing, but are still confused about how to do
it. We need to give them the means to take those first steps.
